Primary characteristics of the tap machines

Which taps does the SAU range offer? What characteristics do they have and what are the advantages in the various uses? Read the in-depth analysis below.

Taps are tools used to create internal threads (female threads) in pre-drilled holes; they can be of the cutting type or forming taps (roll taps).

SAU taps deliver high performance with significant results and are enjoying great success in the worldwide market; all SAU products are strictly Made in Italy.

Taps Features

Types of chamfer

Sau taps have different chamfer characteristics; let’s look at the different types:

-        B=4/5 threads for spiral point tap
-        D=4/5 threads for left-handed helix taps
-        C=2/3 threads suitable for standard blind holes
-        E=1,5/2 threads, these are used for blind holes with rigid tapping and for holes with reduced relief

Forms B and D are used for through holes and offer easy chamfering.

Types of chamfer-taps

Barrel-shaped rear taper type

This geometric feature gives the tapping more deep workings, preventing chipping in the cycle reversal phase.

Excellent performance with materials that show significant expansion during processing such as stainless steel and aluminum.

Tap material and flute type

Taps can be built in:

-HSS or traditional and generic applications

-HSSE or HSS-Co.
These taps have characteristics of good hardness, toughness, wear resistance and are used for general materials.

-HHS-E-PM… Powder metallurgical (PM) high-speed steel with very high hardness and wear resistance, suitable for general-purpose applications including high-hardness materials. The use of synchronous tapping chucks is recommended.

Flute type

Spiral point tap for through holes: it pushes chips forward, making it ideal for long-chipping materials.

15° Spiral Flute Tap: suitable for blind hole machining with shallow depths up to 1.5xD max; the helix allows for chip evacuation from the workpiece.

Tap with Inclined flute 40° and 48°: indicated for deep blind holes and stainless steel-like materials.

Construction tolerances of threading

For tolerances, it is necessary to consider the design's constructional couplings and in particular whether it undergoes subsequent treatments or coatings on the particular thread.

Coolant-through and solid taps

Coolant-through taps have the ability to deliver coolant directly into the hole being tapped. There are two types: one with a central hole and one with holes on the cutting edge.

Taps with a central coolant hole are recommended for blind hole tapping to increase yield and facilitate chip evacuation, whereas taps with radial coolant holes are suitable for through-hole machining.

Roll tapping

Another type is roll tapping, with this technology, the material is not cut but deformed.

The advantages are:

- More speed in carrying out the processing

- During machining, the chip is not created, which allows for deeper threads and very short drains.

- This tapping is used for large productions

- The possibility of using a single tap for both blind and through holes and on different types of material thanks to the absence of chips

- Indicated on all materials with elongation greater than 10%: most stainless steels, aluminium and its alloys.

- Roll tapping allows you to obtain a thread with a high load and a better surface finish than traditional tapping.

Geometric characteristics

Machine taps can feature either an external point or a female center hole; these are purely design features and do not affect the machining performance or the type of threading to be achieved

Those with external centers are normally male for small diameters below M6, while those with a center hole are female for diameters above M6.

Sectors use of Sau taps

Sau taps are used in processing in the automotive, agricultural machinery, earthmoving, automation, aerospace, medical and food sectors, in conclusion all sectors.
